Damon Anthony Dash was born on the 3rd of May 1971, in Harlem, New York City. Growing up, he attended private schools for most of his high school life and this is where he was able to discover his potential to have a career in the music industry.
During his life as a teen, he worked in multiple jobs to support himself by sweeping floss at their local barbershop. He also had to work as a newspaper salesman to save enough money to buy his own sneakers and shirts.
He learned how to “hustle” early in life due to how his mother made efforts on raising her kids. Sadly, when Damon was only fifteen, her mother suddenly died of an asthma attack leaving him and his siblings to work for themselves.
Before Dash’s success from creating Roc-A-Fella Records, he had a girlfriend named Linds Willams.
Both of them had a son together named Dame “Boogie” Dash in 1991. His son has also been in the limelight by starring in “Growing Up Hip Hop”. Boogie is currently engaged to his pregnant fiance Raquel Horn.
By the year 2000, Dash had a relationship with the R&B singer Aaliyah. Though this relationship wasn’t able to go for more than the year as the singer tragically died from a plane crash in August 2001.
There we’re news and interviews of Dash stating that the couple already had plans to marry each other even if they weren’t formally engaged yet.
After a few years, Dash found new love when he met for the first time Rachel Roy and proceeded to get married in 2005. They had two daughters together, the first one being named Ava Dash and the second being Tallulah Dash.
Sadly, their marriage only lasted for a few years as they filed for divorce during 2009. It’s been said that Dash had a tendency to cause domestic violence hence, Rachel filed for a restraining order and sole custody of their children.
Career and Roc-A-Fella Records
Dash started to get a bit of fame when he became the manager of the iconic hip-hop artist Jay-Z. He managed to organize a tour for the rapper which recorded was able to make more than $9 million dollars. Though eventually, he stopped being Jay-Z’s manager as both of them became partners as they started their business venture.
Their first big venture was when they created Roc-A-Fella Records. It was one of the most prominent hip-hop recording labels where artists like Kanye West and Memphis bleak started their careers.
The label was able to become so successful that Damon’s net worth at that time was able to rise to an astonishing $50 million.
Sad to say, the success of being one of the co-founders of a recording studio wasn’t going to last forever. The record label “Def Jam Recordings” wanted a stake in their recording label and eventually purchased Roc-A-Fella Records.
Jay-Z became the CEO and president of Def Jam Recordings and went on to buy out Dash’s stake on their Rocawear clothing line. With Dash losing out all his shares in their business, it caused his relationship to go bad and they eventually split up after 2005.
Other Business Ventures
With the success that he was able to gain from being a record producer, Dash was able to use this success to find other business ventures. During the peak of this success, he was able to create two clothing lines.
One of these clothing lines was “Rocawear” which he co-founded with Jay-Z, was created a clothing line for Roc-A-Fela Records. It managed to become a highly successful brand and was eventually sold for hundreds of millions of dollars during the mid-2000s.
Dash was also able to branch out into other businesses such as film production, merchandise, and talent management. He was able to produce a few well-known films such as “The Woodsman” starring Kevin Bacon and “Paid in Full” which featured Mehi Phifer in it.
The entrepreneur continued on to found the media collective “DD172”, the web design frim VNGRD79, the art gallery DDS33, and another record label “Blueroc Records”.
