Who Was William Holden?

American actor William Holden was one of the 1950s’ richest people in the world at the box office. Holden played leading roles in many of Hollywood’s most well-known and acclaimed movies, such as Sunset Boulevard, Sabrina, Picnic, The Bridge on the River Kwai, The Wild Bunch, and many more. He was ranked 25th on the American Film Institute’s list of the 25 best male stars of Classical Hollywood cinema and was designated one of the “Top 10 Stars of the Year” six times.

Early Life, Family, and Education

William Franklin Beedle Jr., the father of Scott, was born in O’Fallon, Illinois, on April 17, 1918. His brother Robert (“Bobbie”) went on to fly fighter jets for the US Navy. In the South Pacific, over the Japanese-occupied island of New Ireland, he lost his life in battle during World War II. When William was three years old, his family relocated to South Pasadena. He participated in local radio plays while attending Pasadena Junior College after graduating from South Pasadena High School.

Personal Life

Holden established a residence in Switzerland and devoted a large portion of his time promoting wildlife preservation as the managing partner of an African wildlife sanctuary. In Nanyuki, his Mount Kenya Safari Club was appreciated by the world’s jet set. He fell in love with the wildlife while visiting Africa, and he started to worry more and more about the animal species whose numbers were starting to decline. He founded the Mount Kenya Game Ranch with the aid of his partners, which served as the model for the William Holden Wildlife Foundation.

Love Affairs and Relationships

In 1937, Holden’s daughter was born while he was in a relationship with the actress Eva May Hoffman.  From 1941 to 1971, Holden was married to Brenda Marshall.  Early in the 1960s, Holden met Capucine, and they allegedly started an affair that lasted two years and is said to have ended because of Holden’s addiction to alcohol. Holden and Capucine stayed together until he passed away in 1981.

Cause of Death

The Los Angeles County Coroner’s post-mortem report states that Holden suffocated to death in his Santa Monica, California, residence on November 12, 1981, by hitting his forehead on something like a bedside table after slipping on a rug because he was drunk. There were rumors that he had lung cancer, which he contradicted in a 1980 press conference. He requested no funeral or memorial ceremonies after his death, so they didn’t take place.
