American actor William Holden was one of the 1950s’ richest people in the world at the box office. William Franklin Beedle Jr., the father of Scott, was born in O’Fallon, Illinois, on April 17, 1918. His brother Robert (“Bobbie”) went on to fly fighter jets for the US Navy. In the South Pacific, over the Japanese-occupied island of New Ireland, he lost his life in battle during World War II. When William was three years old, his family relocated to South Pasadena. He participated in local radio plays while attending Pasadena Junior College after graduating from South Pasadena High School.

Holden established a residence in Switzerland and devoted a large portion of his time promoting wildlife preservation as the managing partner of an African wildlife sanctuary. He fell in love with the wildlife while visiting Africa, and he started to worry more and more about the animal species whose numbers were starting to decline. He founded the Mount Kenya Game Ranch with the aid of his partners, which served as the model for the William Holden Wildlife Foundation.
