Who is Tommy Chong?

Canadian comedian, actor, singer, and activist Thomas B. Kin Chong was born on May 24, 1938, to Lorna Jean Gilchrist and Stanley Chong in Edmonton, Elberta. He is well-known for creating the marijuana-themed Cheech & Chong comedy duo with Cheech Marin and for his role as Leo on Fox’s That ’70s Show.

Early Life and Struggles Faced by Tommy Chong

In his childhood, Tommy Chong moved to Calgary with his family, residing in a conservative area which he had termed “Dog Patch” because there was a veteran hospital, and his father had been injured in World War II. He spent $500 on a Dog Patch home and made $50 every week to support his family. Chong later discussed quitting Crescent Heights High School at age 16 in an interview. He learned that music could get you reach heights even if you were a skinny, long-haired, geeky-looking person while he was playing guitar to make money.

Battle with Cancer

On June 9, 2012, Chong made the announcement that he is diagnosed with prostate cancer. He claimed that he stopped consuming drugs for almost three years when he first started experiencing issues with his prostate. Chong tweeted on July 15, 2012, that he is 99% cancer free after the treatment. He then claimed to have been diagnosed with colon cancer on 16 June 2015 again, but finally declared himself “cancer-free” in 2019.

Personal Life and Relationships

Chong has two children, Robbi Chong and Rae Dawn, from his first marriage with Gail Lewis. He then married Maxine Sneed in 1960. In 1970, they decided to get divorced. After his divorce with Maxine, he married Shelby Fiddis in 1975 with whom Chong has three children. They adopted a boy named Marcus Wyatt in 1978. As a marijuana activist, Tommy Chong is in favour of making marijuana use legal. In addition to being on the advisory board of NORML (National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws), he often contributes to Cannabis Culture Magazine.

At the age of 53, Lorna passed away on October 29, 1963. She was cremated and buried in Newton Mearns, Scotland’s Mearns Cemetery. We don’t know the cause of her death because it’s still unknown.
