Jelani was born on November 27, 1978, in Saint James, Port of Spain, Trinidad. His father was Robert Maraj, a financial executive and part-time gospel singer of Dougla (Afro-Trinidadian mother and Indo-Trinidadian father) descent. His mother, Carol Maraj, is also a gospel singer with Afro-Trinidadian ancestry. Carol worked in the payroll and accounting departments during Jelani’s youth. His father was addicted to alcohol and crack cocaine and had a violent temper, burning down their house in December 1987.
Jelani has a younger brother named Micaiah Maraj, and two younger sisters named Nicki Minaj and Ming Maraj.
