Albert Thomas Hickman was born on 23 November 1992 to Dwayne Hickman and Joan Roberts. Dwayne Bernard Hickman was born in Los Angeles on May 18, 1934. His father, Milton Hickman, sold insurance and his mother, Katherine Louise (née Ostertag), was a housewife. His maternal grandfather, Louis Henry Ostertag, was a US Navy seaman on Commodore George Dewey’s flagship, the cruiser USS Olympia (C-6), and present at the Battle of Manila Bay on May 1, 1898, for which the Act of Congress awarded him the Dewey Medal. He was the younger brother of child actor Darryl Hickman (born July 28, 1931) and the older brother of Deidre Hickman. Dwayne married three times.

The actor was first married to model and actress Carol Christensen from 1963 to 1972. Born in 1937 in Detroit, Michigan, she began modeling in the 1950s and won Miss New York Summer Festival in 1958. According to ABTC, she passed away in June 2005 from cancer. They together had one son, John Hickman.

His second marriage was to singer Joanne Papile from 2 March 1977 to 1981. Even this marriage didn’t last long and ended in divorce and he married for the third time on 16 April 1983 to Joan Roberts, born on 19 February 1952, in Washington, D.C., United States. She is an actress and voice-over artist. The couple has one son, Albert. Dwayne died from complications of Parkinson’s disease in Los Angeles on January 9, 2022, at the age of 87.
