Wood furniture and materials are susceptible to iron stains from non-galvanized nails, screws, hinges, and other metal components. By keeping metal surfaces dry, rust can be avoided in the best possible way. Of course, it is not always possible to do this.
Once you discover the rust stains, you might be able to purchase rust removal products that contain hazardous chemicals that are bad for the environment and risky to have near small children and pets. However, you probably already have all you need at home for several safer alternatives, so consider them instead.
Ways to clean rust stains
Vinegar
Combine white vinegar and water in a spray bottle. After shaking the solution thoroughly, spray enough of the mixture to completely cover the stain on the wood. Allow it to rest for at least ten minutes. Utilizing an old toothbrush, scrub the solution into the rust stain. With a clean, wet cloth, remove the vinegar mixture. With a dry cloth, remove any extra water that may have accumulated on the wood’s surface.
Use sandpaper
One of the simplest ways to get rust stains out of wood is to use sandpaper. To prevent harming the surface, it is advisable to use extremely fine to medium-grade sandpaper. Even with the necessary precautions, you will still need to touch up the finish on the wood at the end. Go for this method only if you are prepared for a little work at the end. There are always other methods to use, including hiring expert house cleaning services.
Oxalic acid
Testing the cleaner first is important because this method can affect the finish of wooden surfaces. Wear safety equipment and pick a place with good ventilation. Only use the oxalic acid cleaning powder in an amount sufficient to cover the stain. Pour some warm water into a dish, moisten an old toothbrush, and scrub the area with care. 30 minutes after applying the paste to the spot, repeat the process using a moistened toothbrush. After removing the paste with a clean cloth, let the wood dry. You can always resort to the professional cleaners, if not a pro.
Baking soda
Baking soda can be used to get rust out of outdoor furniture. To achieve this, create a paste by combining baking soda with water (for mild amounts of rust) or hydrogen peroxide (for strong rust). Using a cloth or pad, spread the paste over the corroded area. Give it 15 to 20 minutes to work. After the time is up, remove the rust by scrubbing with an abrasive. Repeat the procedure if you observe that the rust has not entirely vanished.
Lemon and salt
Apply a mixture of lemon juice and salt on the rusted area. You could also sprinkle salt on top after applying the lemon. While the acid in the lemon aids in dissolving the rust, the abrasive action of the salt aids in rust removal. After applying the mixture, wait for around 20 minutes. The surface can then be scrubbed and cleaned with an abrasive.
Potato
The oxalic acid found in potatoes can help eliminate rust from furniture, even though it seems weird and impossible. To put this method to use, cut a potato in half and sprinkle it with salt or dish soap. Rub the rusty surface with the potato/salt combination. This will help release the rust from the surface through a chemical reaction. After that, rust can be wiped with a cloth. If needed, repeat the process.
